The Pulis corded coat is one of the most distinctive in the dog world and one of the most labor-intensive to maintain. You need to separate the forming cords by hand regularly during the first year or two to prevent them from clumping. Bathing takes significant time since the cords absorb water and dry slowly. Do not brush the coat since that destroys the cords. Commit to this coat type before getting this breed.

Your Puli needs 30 to 60 minutes of active exercise daily. Walks, herding games, and agility all suit this athletic, quick-moving breed. They are lighter on their feet than their mop-like appearance suggests. Without enough activity they become bored and vocal. Mental stimulation through training and games matters just as much as physical movement.

Pulik are highly intelligent and historically worked independently without constant handler direction. That independence means they think for themselves, which is both impressive and sometimes frustrating during training. Positive reinforcement from a consistent, patient handler works well. Start socialization early. They respond best when they understand the reason behind a task rather than just repeating commands on demand.

Feed a quality medium-breed formula with good protein twice daily. Pulik stay naturally lean when properly exercised. Monitor body condition regularly since their heavy coat makes it difficult to judge visually. Two measured meals a day work better than free feeding. Keep treats reasonable and calorie-conscious.

The Puli is an ancient Hungarian herding breed brought to the Carpathian Basin by Magyar tribes over a thousand years ago. Hungarian shepherds used Pulik to herd sheep across the great plains of Hungary, valuing their agility, intelligence, and ability to work independently across large distances. The breeds corded coat protected it from both harsh weather and predator bites. Hungarian breeders formally standardized the breed in the early 20th century. Today the Puli is recognized worldwide both as a working herder and a striking show dog.
