Health

Bernese Mountain Dogs live 7 to 10 years, which is short for a breed this beloved. Cancer is the leading cause of death and affects a significant portion of the breed. Hip and elbow dysplasia are common, and bloat is a real risk given their deep chest. These health challenges mean you should go to health-testing breeders, schedule regular vet visits, and enjoy every year with your dog.

Grooming

The thick, silky tri-colored coat sheds heavily year-round and dramatically during seasonal coat blows. Brush three to four times a week normally and daily during heavy shedding periods. Bathe every six to eight weeks. Check ears weekly since floppy ears trap moisture. Trim nails monthly and brush teeth regularly.

Exercise

Your Bernese Mountain Dog needs 30 to 60 minutes of moderate exercise daily. They enjoy hiking, carting, and outdoor activities in cool or cold weather. Avoid exercise in heat since their thick coat makes overheating a real risk. Puppies need controlled, low-impact exercise to protect their rapidly growing joints.

Training

Bernese Mountain Dogs are gentle, eager to please, and relatively easy to train with positive reinforcement. Start training and socialization early since their large size means good manners matter from the start. They can be sensitive to harsh handling. Most Berners respond beautifully to calm, patient guidance and thrive in obedience and therapy dog work.

Nutrition

Feed a large-breed formula with controlled calcium and phosphorus levels to support healthy joint and bone development, especially in puppies. Feed two meals a day to reduce bloat risk. Add a joint supplement as your dog ages given the breeds orthopedic challenges. Avoid overfeeding since excess weight worsens joint disease.

History

The Bernese Mountain Dog comes from the canton of Bern in Switzerland, where farmers used them for centuries to herd cattle, pull carts to market, and guard farms. The breed is one of four Swiss mountain dog breeds developed in the Alps. Swiss farmers nearly lost the breed entirely by the early 1900s as farm mechanization reduced the need for working dogs. Albert Heim and other Swiss breeders formally rescued and preserved the breed. Today it ranks among the most loved family dogs in the world.
