Informacion i Detajuar për Racën

Health

Briards typically live 10 to 12 years. Hip dysplasia is the main orthopedic concern. Stationary night blindness, a hereditary eye condition, affects the breed and can be tested for in breeding dogs. Bloat is a real risk given their deep chest, so feed two meals daily and keep exercise away from mealtimes. Source from health-tested breeders.

Grooming

The long, coarse double coat mats easily and needs brushing at least three times a week. Professional grooming every eight to twelve weeks helps maintain a manageable length. Hair around the eyes needs regular trimming so your dog can see clearly. Bathe every four to six weeks. Check ears and trim nails regularly.

Exercise

Your Briard needs at least 60 to 90 minutes of exercise daily. Walks, herding activities, agility, and structured play all suit this breed well. Without consistent activity, they become restless and may start herding people in the household. This is a working breed with serious energy and mental drive.

Training

Briards are intelligent and have historically worked closely with their handlers, which makes them responsive to training when approached correctly. Use positive reinforcement consistently. They can be independent and somewhat stubborn, so confident, patient handling works best. Socialization from puppyhood reduces their natural wariness toward strangers. They excel in herding, obedience, and protection work.

Nutrition

Feed a large-breed, protein-rich formula twice daily to reduce bloat risk. Adjust portions based on your dogs actual activity level. Add a joint supplement as your dog enters middle age. Monitor body condition monthly since their heavy coat can mask weight changes.

History

The Briard is one of Frances oldest herding breeds, with written references dating back to the 8th century. French farmers used them to herd and protect sheep across the countrys open plains. Thomas Jefferson and the Marquis de Lafayette both brought Briards to America in the late 1700s. The French army used Briards as messenger dogs and to search for wounded soldiers during World War I. Today the breed works in herding, search and rescue, and as devoted family companions.
