Chartreux

Chartreux cats live 12 to 15 years. Patellar luxation occurs in the breed more often than in most cats. Polycystic kidney disease has been noted in some lines so request PKD negative status from breeders. Struvite urinary crystals and bladder stones also occur with some frequency. Annual vet visits with urinary health monitoring protect long term health.

Your Chartreux has a dense, woolly blue gray double coat that needs brushing two to three times a week. The coat has a unique water resistant texture that does not mat easily. Avoid over brushing since it disrupts the natural texture. Bathe only occasionally. Trim nails every two weeks, clean ears monthly, and brush teeth regularly.

Chartreux cats are calm and moderately active. They enjoy play but also spend significant time observing their environment quietly. Provide interactive toys, a cat tree, and daily play sessions to keep them mentally and physically fit. Two sessions of ten to fifteen minutes daily keeps most Chartreux satisfied and healthy.

The Chartreux is observant, adaptable, and more trainable than their quiet demeanor suggests. They respond to treat rewards and learn their name and basic cues readily. They are not demanding but they notice everything. Socialize kittens early. Their calm, steady temperament makes them easy to introduce to new people and environments.

Feed a quality protein rich diet with wet food included to support urinary health. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding. The Chartreux can gain weight given their moderate activity level so monitor portions carefully. Choose foods with real meat as the first ingredient and avoid those high in fillers.

The Chartreux is an ancient French breed with history stretching back centuries. French legend holds that Carthusian monks at the Grande Chartreuse monastery near Grenoble developed or kept these blue cats. Historical records mention blue cats in France as far back as the 1500s. The breed nearly went extinct during both World Wars. French breeders rebuilt the Chartreux from surviving cats after World War II. The CFA granted the breed championship status in 1987.
