Siamese Cat

Siamese cats live 12 to 15 years. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and amyloidosis, a liver disease, occur in the breed. Progressive retinal atrophy and mediastinal lymphoma, a cancer affecting the chest, occur at higher rates than in most breeds. Crossed eyes and kinked tails appear in the breed but are cosmetic rather than health problems. Annual vet visits with cardiac monitoring protect long term health.

Your Siamese has a short, fine, glossy coat that needs minimal grooming. A quick brush once a week removes loose hair and keeps the coat shiny. They groom themselves well and rarely need baths. Brush teeth regularly since dental disease is common. Trim nails every two weeks and clean ears monthly.

Siamese cats are highly active and demand daily interaction. They run, jump, and play with kitten energy for years. Provide tall cat trees, wand toys, puzzle feeders, and a companion cat if you are away for long periods. Budget at least two or three active play sessions daily. A bored Siamese becomes very loud very fast.

The Siamese is one of the most trainable cat breeds. They respond enthusiastically to treat rewards and learn their name, tricks, leash walking, and games readily. They are vocal and will tell you exactly what they think throughout training. Start young. Socialization from kittenhood produces a confident, sociable adult who handles new people and situations well.

Feed a quality high protein diet twice daily. Siamese cats have a lean build and fast metabolism so adequate protein matters. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding. Choose foods with real meat as the first ingredient. Always provide fresh water. Monitor weight monthly and adjust portions based on activity level.

The Siamese is one of the oldest and most recognized cat breeds in the world, originating in Thailand, formerly known as Siam. The Cat Book Poems, a Thai manuscript dating from 1350 to 1767, depicts cats resembling the modern Siamese. Thai royalty kept these cats and considered them sacred. The breed reached Britain in 1884 when the British Consul General brought a pair from Bangkok as a gift from the Thai royal family. The CFA recognized the Siamese as a founding breed in 1906.
