Informazioni Dettagliate sulla Razza

Health

Whippets live 12 to 15 years and are a generally healthy sighthound breed. Cardiac arrhythmias occur more often than in most breeds so cardiac evaluation is worthwhile. Their lean build means anesthesia affects them differently so always tell your vet the breed before any procedure. Eye conditions and certain genetic conditions occur occasionally. Source carefully and schedule annual vet visits.

Grooming

Your Whippet has a short, smooth coat that needs only a weekly brush. Shedding is light. Being thin coated, provide a sweater in cold weather since they get cold easily. Bathe monthly or when needed. Trim nails every three to four weeks and brush teeth regularly.

Exercise

Your Whippet needs a real run every day in a securely enclosed area. They are extremely fast with a strong prey drive that makes off leash exercise dangerous in open spaces. They stay calm and relaxed indoors once their daily sprint is satisfied. Never underestimate their need for an actual run, not just a walk.

Training

Whippets are gentle, intelligent, and responsive to positive reinforcement. They are more eager to please than many sighthound breeds. Start socialization early since they can be sensitive and cautious with new situations. Avoid harsh corrections since they shut down quickly under pressure. Their natural gentleness makes them excellent dogs for attentive, patient owners.

Nutrition

Whippets look lean even at a healthy weight so judge body condition by feel rather than appearance. Feed a quality medium breed formula twice daily in measured portions. Add omega 3 fatty acids to support coat health. Fresh water should always be available especially after exercise.

History

The Whippet developed in England in the 19th century from crosses between Greyhounds and various terrier breeds. English working class dog racers in northern England bred these smaller, faster dogs for snap races on short straight courses. The breed became enormously popular as a racing dog among English miners and mill workers. Their gentle temperament made them beloved family dogs alongside their racing career. The AKC recognized the Whippet in 1888.
