Informazioni Dettagliate sulla Razza

Health

Tornjaks live 12 to 14 years and are a generally healthy livestock guardian breed. Hip dysplasia occurs given their large build. As a breed shaped by centuries of natural selection in harsh Balkan mountain conditions, major hereditary diseases are relatively uncommon. Keep your dog lean, schedule annual vet visits, and add joint supplements as your dog ages.

Grooming

Your Tornjak has a thick double coat that needs brushing two to three times a week. Shedding increases heavily during seasonal coat blows so brush daily during those periods. Bathe every six to eight weeks. Check ears weekly, trim nails monthly, and brush teeth regularly.

Exercise

Your Tornjak needs daily movement and space more than structured exercise. Long walks and access to a large, securely fenced area match their guardian instinct to patrol. They are calm indoors when their patrol needs are met. Without space and purpose, their guarding instinct becomes difficult to manage.

Training

Tornjaks are independent thinkers bred to work without human direction on remote mountain pastures. Training requires patience, confidence, and early socialization above everything else. Use positive reinforcement. Start obedience from day one and socialize your puppy widely. Professional guidance helps significantly for owners new to livestock guardian breeds.

Nutrition

Feed a large breed formula with quality protein twice daily. Monitor body condition monthly since the thick coat makes visual assessment difficult. Two meals per day works better than one large serving. Add joint supplements as your dog enters middle age. Fresh water should always be available.

History

The Tornjak is an ancient livestock guardian breed native to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, where shepherds used them for centuries to protect flocks against wolves and bears in the Dinaric Alps. Historical documents mention large white shepherd dogs in the region as far back as the 11th century. The breed nearly went extinct by the late 20th century. Croatian and Bosnian cynologists worked together to revive the Tornjak from surviving farm dogs in the 1970s and 1980s. The FCI recognized the breed in 2017.
