Informazioni Dettagliate sulla Razza

Health

The Slovensky Cuvac lives 11 to 13 years and is a generally healthy livestock guardian breed. Hip dysplasia occurs given their large, powerful build. Being a breed developed through centuries of natural selection in harsh mountain conditions, major hereditary diseases are not common. Keep your dog lean, schedule annual vet visits, and add joint supplements as your dog ages.

Grooming

Your Slovensky Cuvac has a thick, white double coat that needs brushing two to three times a week. Shedding increases heavily during seasonal coat blows, so brush daily during those periods. Bathe every six to eight weeks. Check ears weekly, trim nails monthly, and brush teeth regularly. Never shave the coat since it insulates against both heat and cold.

Exercise

Your Slovensky Cuvac needs daily movement and space more than structured exercise. Long walks and access to a large, securely fenced area match their instinct to patrol. They are calm indoors when their patrol needs are met. Without space and purpose, their guarding instinct becomes difficult to manage.

Training

This breed is independent and was bred to make decisions without human direction on remote mountain pastures. Training requires patience, early socialization, and a confident handler. Use positive reinforcement. Start obedience and socialization from day one so your dog learns to distinguish everyday situations from genuine threats. Professional guidance helps significantly for first time owners.

Nutrition

Feed a large breed formula with quality protein twice daily. Two meals per day works better than one large serving for this size dog. Monitor body condition monthly since the thick coat hides gradual weight changes. Add joint supplements as your dog enters middle age.

History

The Slovensky Cuvac is an ancient Slovak breed that shepherds used for centuries to guard flocks in the Carpathian and Tatra Mountains against wolves and bears. The mountain climate and terrain shaped the breed over generations into a powerful, cold tolerant guardian. Formal breed preservation efforts began in the 1960s at the Brno Veterinary School in what was then Czechoslovakia. The FCI recognized the breed in 1969. Outside Slovakia, the Cuvac remains very rare.
