Tibetan Spaniels live 12 to 15 years. Progressive retinal atrophy and certain heart conditions occur in the breed. Patellar luxation is also documented. Their slightly flattened face can cause mild breathing difficulty in heat so avoid intense exercise on warm days. Source from health tested breeders and schedule annual vet visits.

Your Tibetan Spaniel has a silky double coat that needs brushing two to three times a week. The mane around the neck and feathering on the legs and tail get tangled most easily. Bathe every four to six weeks. Check ears weekly, trim nails monthly, and brush teeth regularly.

Your Tibetan Spaniel needs 20 to 30 minutes of gentle activity daily. Short walks and indoor play sessions suit their moderate energy well. Avoid exercise in heat given their slightly shortened face. They adapt well to apartment life when given consistent daily movement.

Tibetan Spaniels are intelligent and independent, with a somewhat cat like attitude toward commands. Use positive reinforcement with patience. Start socialization early since they can be reserved with strangers. Keep training sessions short and interesting. They learn well but decide whether to comply based on their own judgment.

Feed a quality small breed formula twice daily with measured portions. Tibetan Spaniels gain weight easily so keep treats minimal and portions controlled. Two meals per day works better than free feeding. Fresh water should always be available.

Tibetan Spaniels lived in Tibetan Buddhist monasteries for over 2,500 years, where monks kept them as cherished companion dogs and watch dogs. Monks trained them to turn prayer wheels and they slept on the high walls of monasteries to alert monks to approaching strangers. The breed was considered sacred and was never sold, only given as gifts to Chinese emperors and other dignitaries. Western missionaries and diplomats brought the breed to England in the late 19th century. The AKC recognized the Tibetan Spaniel in 1984.
