Health

Thai Ridgebacks live 12 to 14 years and are a generally healthy primitive breed. Dermoid sinus, a hereditary skin condition along the spine, occurs in some individuals and requires surgical treatment. Hip dysplasia and certain eye conditions also appear. Check puppies for dermoid sinus before purchase. Source from responsible breeders and schedule annual vet visits.

Grooming

Your Thai Ridgeback has a short, smooth coat that needs only a weekly brush. The distinctive ridge along the back requires no special care. Bathe monthly or when needed. Check ears weekly, trim nails every three to four weeks, and brush teeth regularly. This is one of the lowest maintenance coats of any breed.

Exercise

Your Thai Ridgeback needs 60 minutes of vigorous exercise daily. Running, hiking, and active play in a securely fenced area match their athletic, agile build. Their prey drive is strong so never let them off leash in open areas. They have real stamina and genuinely love to run.

Training

Thai Ridgebacks are intelligent but independent and can be challenging to train. Use positive reinforcement with patience. Start socialization from day one since this breed tends toward wariness with strangers. Early training from a confident, consistent handler is essential. This breed is not typically suited to first time dog owners.

Nutrition

Feed a quality medium breed formula twice daily with measured portions. Thai Ridgebacks stay naturally lean when properly exercised. Monitor body condition monthly and keep treats minimal. Two meals per day works better than free feeding.

History

The Thai Ridgeback is one of only three breeds in the world with a distinctive ridge of hair running along the spine. The breed developed on the eastern islands of Thailand, where it was used as a hunting and guard dog by villagers for centuries. Geographic isolation kept the breed relatively pure. Western dog fanciers discovered the breed in the late 20th century. The FCI recognized the Thai Ridgeback in 1993 and the AKC added it to the Foundation Stock Service in 1997.
