Chow Chow

Chow Chows typically live 9 to 15 years. Hip and elbow dysplasia are significant concerns given their sturdy build. Entropion, where the eyelid rolls inward, occurs fairly often and may need surgical correction. Their skin folds also need regular checks to prevent irritation.

That thick, dense coat needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent matting. Shedding increases heavily during seasonal coat blows, requiring daily brushing then. Bathe every six to eight weeks. Facial wrinkles and folds need regular wiping to prevent skin issues.

Chow Chows have notably low-to-moderate energy and need about 30 to 45 minutes of activity daily. Walks and moderate play sessions suit their independent, reserved nature well. Their thick coat makes them prone to overheating, so avoid intense exercise in hot weather. They genuinely prefer calm, predictable routines.

Independent and dignified, Chow Chows are notoriously challenging to train compared to most breeds. Positive reinforcement with patience produces the best results. Early socialization is essential given their natural aloofness toward strangers. This is generally not a breed for first-time or highly hands-off owners.

A quality medium-breed formula with moderate protein suits their lower energy needs. Two measured meals daily work well for this breed. Watch their weight closely, as they gain easily given their lower activity level. Fresh water should always be available.

One of the oldest dog breeds, the Chow Chow originated in China over 2,000 years ago, used for hunting, guarding, and even pulling carts. Their distinctive blue-black tongue and lion-like mane set them apart visually from nearly every other breed. Chinese emperors once kept large kennels of Chows for hunting expeditions. The breed reached the West in the late 1800s and remains a dignified, independent companion today.
