Informazioni Dettagliate sulla Razza

Health

Spanish Mastiffs live 10 to 11 years. Hip and elbow dysplasia are significant concerns given their enormous size. Bloat strikes deep chested giant breeds fast, so feed two meals daily and keep exercise away from mealtimes. Heart conditions and entropion, where the eyelid rolls inward, also occur. Keep your dog lean, schedule twice yearly vet visits, and watch for bloat symptoms closely.

Grooming

Your Spanish Mastiff has a dense double coat that sheds moderately and needs brushing once or twice a week. During seasonal coat blows, brush daily to manage the volume. Wipe facial jowls and neck folds regularly to prevent moisture buildup and skin infection. Bathe every six to eight weeks. Check ears weekly and trim nails monthly.

Exercise

Your Spanish Mastiff needs 30 to 45 minutes of gentle daily exercise. Long, slow walks suit their deliberate, calm nature well. Avoid intense activity in heat since their size makes overheating a real risk. Puppies need controlled, low impact movement to protect their rapidly developing joints. This is not a breed for jogging partners.

Training

Spanish Mastiffs are deeply independent livestock guardians bred to work without human direction. Training requires patience, confidence, and extensive early socialization. Use positive reinforcement without force. Start training from day one since their size makes bad habits dangerous by adulthood. Professional guidance is strongly recommended for first time owners of guardian breeds.

Nutrition

Feed a large breed formula twice daily to reduce bloat risk. Puppies need a large breed growth formula to limit rapid bone development. Add joint supplements from early adulthood. Avoid overfeeding since obesity shortens this breed life and worsens joint disease significantly.

History

The Spanish Mastiff is one of the oldest livestock guardian breeds in the world, with documented use in Spain dating back over 2,000 years. Spanish shepherds used them to guard enormous migrating flocks of Merino sheep along traditional routes called canadas across the Iberian Peninsula. Their size and courage made them capable of fighting off wolves and bears without human help. Spanish law historically required that every flock of 100 sheep include a certain number of Spanish Mastiffs for protection.
