That medium-length, feathered coat needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent matting. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks keeps the coat manageable. Bathe every few weeks. Ears need regular checks and cleaning at every grooming session.

Bred to flush and retrieve game birds, English Springer Spaniels need close to an hour of activity daily. Walks, fetch, and field work suit their energetic, sporting nature well. Developed in England, the English Springer Spaniel descends from the same root stock as the Cocker Spaniel, with the larger puppies in litters historically bred for "springing" game birds into flight. The breed was formally separated from Cockers based on size in the late 1800s. Their versatility made them favorites among bird hunters. Today the breed remains both a capable gundog and a popular family companion.
