Mudis typically live 12 to 14 years and are a generally healthy breed. Hip dysplasia and certain eye conditions occur occasionally. Being a relatively rare breed helps keep the gene pool fairly diverse. Routine vet visits keep this versatile herding breed thriving.

That wavy, medium-length coat needs brushing once or twice a week to manage shedding. Shedding increases seasonally, requiring more attention during those periods. Bathe only when needed. Nail trims and ear checks complete a simple routine.

Bred for herding livestock across the Hungarian countryside, Mudis need close to an hour of activity daily. Walks, herding games, and agility suit their athletic, intelligent nature well. They thrive with both physical movement and mental challenges. A bored Mudi quickly becomes restless or vocal.

Developed in Hungary, the Mudi emerged naturally from a mix of local herding breeds, recognized as a distinct breed only in the early 1900s. Hungarian farmers valued the breed's versatility for herding sheep, cattle, and pigs alike. The breed nearly went extinct during World War II before dedicated breeders revived the population. Today it remains rare outside Hungary but is prized for its remarkable intelligence and versatility.
