Irish Water Spaniel

Irish Water Spaniels typically live 10 to 12 years. Hip dysplasia and certain eye conditions occur given their athletic build. Ear infections are also a concern given their floppy ears and love of water. Otherwise, this is a generally healthy, sturdy sporting breed.

That tight, curly liver-colored coat needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent matting. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks keeps the coat manageable. Their ears need extra attention given their love of swimming. Bathe as needed, drying thoroughly afterward.

Bred for retrieving waterfowl, Irish Water Spaniels absolutely love to swim and need close to an hour of activity daily. Fetch, swimming, and field work suit them perfectly.
