Informazioni Dettagliate sulla Razza

Health

Barbets are a generally healthy breed, often living 12 to 14 years. Hip dysplasia and certain eye conditions occur occasionally. Being water dogs, ear infections are something to watch given moisture exposure. Otherwise, this is a hardy, resilient companion breed.

Grooming

That curly, woolly coat needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent matting. Regular trims every couple of months keep the coat manageable. Their ears need extra attention given their love of water. Bathe as needed, drying thoroughly afterward.

Exercise

Bred as a water retriever, the Barbet absolutely loves to swim and needs about an hour of activity daily. Fetch, swimming, and hiking all suit them perfectly. They have great stamina paired with a calm, easygoing nature at home. Mental stimulation through games keeps them well-rounded.

Training

Intelligent and eager to please, Barbets are genuinely a joy to train. Positive reinforcement works wonderfully with this breed. Early socialization rounds out their naturally friendly temperament. They excel in obedience, agility, and water retrieving activities.

Nutrition

A quality medium-breed formula with good protein content suits their active lifestyle. Two measured meals daily work well for this breed. Watch their weight, as they can gain if under-exercised. Fresh water should always be available, especially after swimming sessions.

History

One of the oldest French water dog breeds, the Barbet has roots tracing back centuries, possibly contributing to the development of the Poodle. Bred for retrieving waterfowl, their thick curly coat protected them in cold water. The breed nearly vanished after World War II but was carefully revived. It remains rare but deeply loved by enthusiasts today.
