Informazioni Dettagliate sulla Razza

Health

Irish Terriers typically live 13 to 15 years, an excellent lifespan. Hyperkeratosis, a skin condition causing thickened paw pads, occurs more often in this breed. Hip dysplasia and certain eye conditions are also noted occasionally. Otherwise, this is a generally hardy, long-living terrier.

Grooming

That wiry red coat needs brushing once or twice a week to manage tangles. Hand-stripping a few times a year maintains proper coat texture. Bathe only when needed, as frequent washing softens the coat. Nail trims and dental care round out the routine.

Exercise

Spirited and bold, Irish Terriers need about 45 to 60 minutes of activity daily. Walks, fetch, and active play suit their energetic, feisty nature well. They have real stamina and a genuine love of digging and exploring. Mental stimulation through games keeps boredom away.

Training

Intelligent but stubborn, Irish Terriers can be a genuine training challenge for new owners. Positive reinforcement and consistency pay off well. Early socialization helps round out their naturally bold, sometimes scrappy temperament. Short, engaging sessions work better than long, repetitive ones.

Nutrition

A medium-breed formula with quality protein suits this energetic dog well. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding. Watch portions closely, as they can gain weight if under-exercised. Fresh water should always be available.

History

One of Ireland's oldest terrier breeds, the Irish Terrier was developed centuries ago to hunt vermin and guard farms across the Irish countryside. Known for fearless courage, the breed served as a messenger dog during World War I, often under heavy fire. Their loyalty and boldness earned them the nickname "daredevil" among Irish dog fanciers. The breed remains a spirited, devoted companion today.
