Informazioni Dettagliate sulla Razza

Health

Bloodhounds live 10 to 12 years. Bloat is a serious and well-documented risk in this deep-chested breed, so feed two meals daily and keep exercise away from mealtimes. Hip and elbow dysplasia occur. Ear infections are common given their long ears that trap moisture. Skin fold infections around the face also require regular attention.

Grooming

The short coat is easy to brush weekly with a rubber mitt. The real grooming priority is the ears and facial folds. Check ears weekly and clean them to prevent infection. Wipe facial wrinkles and dewlap folds several times a week to keep skin dry and healthy. Bathe monthly or when your dog finds something interesting to roll in.

Exercise

Your Bloodhound needs 45 to 60 minutes of exercise daily. They follow their nose absolutely and will ignore everything else once on a scent trail. Keep them leashed at all times outdoors and use secure fencing. Tracking and nosework activities are perfect outlets for this breeds extraordinary scenting ability.

Training

Bloodhounds are intelligent but deeply independent. Once they catch a scent, commands become background noise. Use positive reinforcement and high-value food rewards. Train early and be patient since this breed operates on its own timeline. Off-leash recall is genuinely unreliable, so focus on leash manners and scent-based activities instead.

Nutrition

Feed a large-breed formula twice daily to reduce bloat risk. Measure portions carefully since Bloodhounds are enthusiastic eaters and will gain weight easily. Extra weight worsens their joint and mobility issues significantly. Avoid elevated food bowls unless your vet specifically recommends them for this breed.

History

The Bloodhound is one of the oldest scent hound breeds in existence, with origins tracing back to medieval Europe and Saint Huberts monastery in Belgium, where monks carefully bred tracking dogs from the 7th century onward. English nobility refined the breed for deer and boar hunting. The Bloodhounds tracking ability is so accurate that its trailing evidence is legally admissible in courts in some countries. Today law enforcement agencies worldwide still use Bloodhounds for tracking missing persons and criminals.
