Informazioni Dettagliate sulla Razza

Health

This breed enjoys a long, healthy lifespan of 11 to 13 years. Hip dysplasia and ear infections are the main concerns, given their long floppy ears. Bloat is a risk in deep-chested dogs, so splitting meals helps. Otherwise, this is a hardy, low-fuss hunting breed.

Grooming

The short, smooth coat sheds moderately and needs just a weekly brush. Those long ears trap moisture, so check and clean them regularly to avoid infection. Bathe only when needed. Nail trims and teeth brushing round out a simple routine.

Exercise

Bred to run for hours chasing scent trails, these dogs need serious daily exercise — at least an hour of real activity. Long walks, runs, and scent games keep them satisfied. Without enough outlet, they become vocal and restless. A securely fenced yard is essential.

Training

Independent and nose-driven, this breed can be a bit stubborn during training. Positive reinforcement and patience go a long way. Their strong scenting instinct means recall is genuinely difficult once they catch a trail. Early socialization helps them become well-rounded companions.

Nutrition

Active working dogs need a protein-rich diet to match their energy output. Two measured meals daily work better than one large feeding for this deep-chested breed. Watch for bloat-related risks by avoiding heavy exercise right after eating. Fresh water should always be accessible.

History

Developed in the American South from English Foxhound stock, this breed was bred for stamina and a powerful nose to trail raccoons through the night. Hunters valued their loud, distinctive bay. The breed remained a working dog for generations before gaining AKC recognition in 2011. It's still prized by hunters today.
