Egyptian Maus live 12 to 15 years. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy occurs in the breed and cardiac screening of breeding cats matters. Leukodystrophy, a neurological condition affecting the nervous system, has been documented in some lines. They can also be sensitive to anesthesia and medications at higher temperatures. Annual vet visits and cardiac monitoring protect long term health.

Your Egyptian Mau has a medium length, dense, silky coat that needs brushing two to three times a week to manage shedding and keep the spotted pattern vivid. They groom themselves well so baths are rarely needed. Trim nails every two weeks, clean ears monthly, and brush teeth regularly. Grooming is straightforward with this naturally clean breed.

Egyptian Maus are fast, athletic, and highly energetic. They are one of the fastest domestic cat breeds and love to run, climb, and hunt. Provide wand toys, tall climbing structures, and interactive feeders. Without enough daily stimulation they become stressed and vocal. Two or three vigorous play sessions daily are essential.

Egyptian Maus are intelligent and responsive to treat based training but they are selective about who they trust. Bond with your cat first and training follows naturally. They learn their name, routines, and basic tricks with patient positive reinforcement. Early socialization is critical since they can be shy or fearful without it.

Feed a high quality protein rich diet with wet food as the primary component. Egyptian Maus are active cats with a fast metabolism so adequate protein matters. Two measured meals daily work well. Choose foods with real meat first. Always provide fresh water and avoid fillers like corn or soy.

The Egyptian Mau is one of the oldest domesticated cat breeds, with a lineage dating back to ancient Egypt. Cats resembling the Mau appear in Egyptian papyrus art over 3,000 years old. The modern breed was saved from near extinction by Russian Princess Nathalie Troubetskoy, who brought spotted Egyptian cats from Cairo to Rome and then to the United States in 1956. The CFA recognized the Egyptian Mau in 1977. It remains the only naturally spotted domestic cat breed.
