Informations Détaillées sur la Race

Health

Yakutian Laikas live 10 to 12 years and are a generally healthy primitive sled dog breed. Hip dysplasia occurs occasionally. As a breed developed through natural selection in the extreme conditions of the Russian Arctic, major hereditary diseases are not common. Annual vet visits and a lean body weight support long term health. Ask breeders about health screening in their lines.

Grooming

Your Yakutian Laika has a thick double coat that needs brushing two to three times a week. Shedding is heavy during seasonal coat blows so brush daily during those periods. Bathe every six to eight weeks. Never shave the coat since it insulates against both extreme cold and summer heat. Check ears weekly and trim nails monthly.

Exercise

Your Yakutian Laika needs at least 60 to 90 minutes of vigorous exercise daily. Running, hiking, pulling sports, and agility match their exceptional stamina and love of cold weather. They struggle in heat so schedule exercise early or late in warm months. Without enough activity they become vocal and difficult to manage indoors.

Training

Yakutian Laikas are intelligent but independent with the mindset of a working sled dog. Use positive reinforcement consistently. Start socialization from day one since they can be reserved with strangers. This breed responds best to a confident, patient owner who builds trust before asking for compliance. Keep sessions varied and purposeful.

Nutrition

Feed a high quality protein rich formula twice daily calibrated to your dog activity level. Working Yakutian Laikas burn exceptional amounts of calories in cold conditions. Lightly active pets need carefully controlled portions. Monitor body condition monthly. Fresh water must always be available.

History

The Yakutian Laika is one of the oldest sled dog breeds in the world, used by the Yakut people of northeastern Siberia for thousands of years to pull sleds, herd reindeer, and hunt in some of the coldest conditions on earth. Temperatures in their native region regularly reach minus 50 degrees Celsius. The breed remained largely isolated in Russia for centuries. The Russian Kynological Federation recognized the Yakutian Laika in 1998. The breed is gaining slow recognition internationally today.
