Informations Détaillées sur la Race

Health

Lapponian Herders are a generally healthy, hardy breed, often living 12 to 14 years. Hip dysplasia occurs occasionally given their active herding build. Being a relatively rare breed outside Scandinavia helps keep the gene pool fairly diverse. Routine vet visits keep this resilient breed thriving.

Grooming

That dense double coat needs brushing two to three times a week to manage shedding. Shedding increases heavily during seasonal coat blows, requiring daily brushing then. Bathe only when needed, as their coat naturally resists dirt and cold. Nail trims and ear checks round out a simple routine.

Exercise

Bred for herding reindeer across Arctic terrain, Lapponian Herders need close to an hour of activity daily. Walks, herding games, and active play suit their athletic, alert nature well. They have real stamina and a genuine love of cold weather and outdoor work. Mental stimulation through training keeps their sharp mind satisfied.

Training

Highly intelligent and eager to please, Lapponian Herders generally train very well. Positive reinforcement produces excellent results. Early socialization rounds out their naturally friendly, alert temperament. This breed genuinely enjoys learning new tasks and excels at herding-related activities.

Nutrition

A medium-breed formula with quality protein suits their active herding lifestyle. Two measured meals daily support steady energy throughout busy days. Watch portions during less active periods to avoid weight gain. Fresh water should always be available, especially after exercise.

History

Developed by the Sami people of northern Finland and Sweden, the Lapponian Herder has herded reindeer across the Arctic tundra for centuries. Their thick coat and tireless work ethic suited the harsh Nordic climate perfectly. The breed transitioned from herding to companionship as reindeer herding modernized. Today it remains a cheerful, hardy breed well-loved in its native region.
