Informations Détaillées sur la Race

Health

Toy Fox Terriers live 13 to 15 years. Patellar luxation, Legg Calve Perthes disease, and Von Willebrand disease occur in the breed. Congenital hypothyroidism with goiter is also documented in some lines. Deafness occurs in dogs with large amounts of white in their coat. Source from health tested breeders and schedule annual vet visits.

Grooming

Your Toy Fox Terrier has a short, smooth coat that needs only a weekly brush. Being thin coated, provide a sweater in cold weather. Bathe monthly or when needed. Check ears weekly, trim nails every three weeks, and brush teeth regularly given the small mouth tendency toward dental crowding.

Exercise

Your Toy Fox Terrier needs 20 to 30 minutes of active exercise daily. Short walks and indoor play sessions match their spirited energy in a small package. Mental stimulation through trick training and puzzle games keeps their sharp mind satisfied. Secure fencing matters since their prey drive sends them after small animals.

Training

Toy Fox Terriers are intelligent, alert, and generally trainable with positive reinforcement. They enjoy performing and excel at learning tricks. Start socialization early. Keep sessions short since they disengage quickly with repetition. Their eagerness to engage makes them more responsive than many toy breeds.

Nutrition

Feed a tiny breed formula twice daily with measured portions. Hypoglycemia is a real risk for puppies so give small frequent meals in the first months. Watch weight closely since even small amounts of excess strain their tiny frame. Keep treats minimal and calorie light.

History

The Toy Fox Terrier developed in the United States in the early 1900s from small Smooth Fox Terriers selectively bred down in size. American farmers and hunters used them to rid homes and barns of rats while circus performers valued their trainability for trick acts. The breed is entirely American in origin unlike most toy breeds which came from Europe. The UKC recognized the Toy Fox Terrier in 1936. The AKC granted full recognition in 2003.
