Informations Détaillées sur la Race

Health

Lakeland Terriers typically live 12 to 16 years, an excellent lifespan. Certain eye conditions and patellar luxation occur occasionally given their small size. Otherwise, this is a generally hardy, long-living terrier breed with few major health concerns.

Grooming

That wiry coat needs brushing once or twice a week to manage tangles. Hand-stripping or professional grooming every couple of months maintains proper coat texture and shape. Bathe only when needed. Facial hair needs occasional trimming to keep their vision clear.

Exercise

Spirited and bold, Lakeland Terriers need about 45 to 60 minutes of activity daily. Walks, fetch, and active play suit their energetic, feisty nature well. They have real stamina and a genuine love of digging and exploring. Mental stimulation through games keeps boredom away.

Training

Intelligent but stubborn, Lakeland Terriers can be a genuine training challenge for new owners. Positive reinforcement and consistency pay off well. Early socialization helps round out their naturally bold, independent temperament. Short, engaging sessions work better than long, repetitive ones.

Nutrition

A small-to-medium breed formula with quality protein suits this energetic dog well. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding. Watch portions closely, as they can gain weight if under-exercised. Fresh water should always be available.

History

Developed in England's Lake District, this breed was bred by farmers to hunt foxes that threatened sheep flocks in the rugged Cumbrian hills. Their compact, agile build allowed them to pursue prey into rocky dens. The breed remains one of the oldest working terriers still close to its original form. Today it's prized for its spirited, fearless temperament.
