Informations Détaillées sur la Race

Health

Kai Ken dogs are a generally healthy, hardy breed, often living 12 to 14 years. Hip dysplasia occurs occasionally given their active, working build. Being a rare breed outside Japan helps keep the gene pool relatively diverse. Routine vet visits keep this resilient breed thriving.

Grooming

The short, dense double coat is wonderfully low-maintenance. A weekly brush keeps shedding under control and the coat clean. Shedding increases during seasonal coat blows. Bathe only when genuinely needed.

Exercise

Bred for hunting deer and boar across Japan's mountainous terrain, Kai Ken dogs need close to an hour of activity daily. Walks, scent games, and active play suit their athletic, agile nature well. They have real stamina and excellent climbing ability. Mental stimulation through training keeps their sharp mind satisfied.

Training

Intelligent but independent, Kai Ken dogs need a confident, consistent owner. Early socialization helps round out their naturally loyal, alert temperament. Positive reinforcement works best with this breed. They form deep bonds with their family but can be reserved with strangers.

Nutrition

A medium-breed formula with quality protein suits their active lifestyle well. Two measured meals daily work well for this breed. Watch portions during less active periods to avoid weight gain. Fresh water should always be available, especially after exercise.

History

One of Japan's six native breeds, the Kai Ken developed in the isolated mountains of Yamanashi Prefecture, bred by local hunters for tracking deer and wild boar across steep terrain. Their distinctive brindle coat and excellent climbing ability set them apart. Japan designated the breed a natural monument in 1934. It remains relatively rare outside Japan but valued for its hunting ability and loyal temperament.
