Informations Détaillées sur la Race

Health

Ragamuffins live 12 to 16 years. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the primary hereditary concern and cardiac testing of breeding cats matters. Polycystic kidney disease also occurs in the breed. Weight management is important since Ragamuffins are large, food motivated cats that gain weight easily. Request PKD and cardiac testing results from breeders and schedule annual vet visits.

Grooming

Your Ragamuffin has a long, thick, silky coat that is surprisingly tangle resistant. Brush two to three times a week to manage shedding and keep the coat mat free. The collar area and behind the ears mat most easily so give those areas extra attention. Bathe every four to six weeks. Trim nails every two weeks and clean ears monthly.

Exercise

Ragamuffins are gentle, calm, and moderately playful. They enjoy interactive toys and gentle games but prefer quiet companionship over intense activity. Provide wand toys, a sturdy cat tree, and two short play sessions daily. Without enough enrichment they can become sedentary which contributes to weight gain.

Training

Ragamuffins are affectionate, social, and respond well to gentle positive reinforcement. They learn their name, tricks, and routines with treat rewards. They go limp when held, earning their calm reputation, and enjoy being handled extensively. Socialize kittens early. Their mellow temperament makes them one of the easiest breeds to train and live with.

Nutrition

Feed a quality protein rich diet twice daily with carefully measured portions. Ragamuffins are food motivated and prone to obesity. Avoid free feeding entirely. Choose foods with real meat as the first ingredient. Wet food supports hydration and helps with portion satisfaction. Monitor weight monthly and adjust portions accordingly.

History

The Ragamuffin developed from the Ragdoll breed in 1994 when a group of breeders separated from the original Ragdoll breeding program. They wanted greater flexibility in breeding and outcrossing than the original program allowed. The name Ragamuffin was chosen to reflect the breed connection to the Ragdoll without using the trademarked name. Breeders introduced additional cats to expand the gene pool and color range. The CFA recognized the Ragamuffin in 2011.
