Scottish Folds live 11 to 14 years. The folded ear gene causes osteochondrodysplasia, a painful cartilage and bone disease that affects all Scottish Folds to varying degrees. Breeding two folded ear cats together produces severe, crippling joint disease in kittens. Responsible breeders only pair folded ear cats with straight eared partners. Scottish Folds come in shorthaired and longhaired varieties. Shorthaired cats need brushing twice a week. Longhaired coats need brushing three to four times weekly to prevent tangles. Clean the folded ears weekly since the tight ear fold traps wax and debris more than in upright eared breeds. Trim nails every two weeks and brush teeth regularly.

Scottish Folds are calm and moderately playful. They enjoy interactive wand toys and puzzle feeders but prefer gentle activity over intense play. Watch for signs of joint pain such as reluctance to jump or stiffness when moving. Provide low entry litter boxes and accessible cat furniture. Two gentle play sessions daily of ten minutes each keeps most Scottish Folds content.

Scottish Folds are intelligent, sweet natured, and adapt well to routines. They respond to treat rewards and learn their name and basic behaviors readily. They are not demanding or boundary testing cats. Socialize kittens early with different people and environments. Their calm, adaptable temperament makes them easy to live with in most households.

Feed a quality protein rich diet twice daily with measured portions. Scottish Folds can gain weight given their moderate activity level, which worsens their joint disease. The Scottish Fold originated in Scotland in 1961 when shepherd William Ross noticed a white cat named Susie with unusual folded ears on a farm in Perthshire. Ross obtained a kitten from Susie litter and began developing the breed. Geneticist Pat Turner helped establish the breeding program. The folded ear results from a dominant gene mutation affecting cartilage. The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy banned the breed in the UK over welfare concerns. The breed remains popular internationally despite ongoing ethical debate about the osteochondrodysplasia it causes.
