Informations Détaillées sur la Race

Health

Japanese Bobtails live 15 to 18 years and are one of the healthiest naturally occurring cat breeds. The bobtail gene is dominant and does not cause the spinal problems associated with some other bobtail breeds. Hip dysplasia occurs rarely. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is not common but annual vet visits remain important. This breed is generally robust with few hereditary health issues.

Grooming

Japanese Bobtails come in shorthaired and longhaired varieties. Shorthaired coats need brushing twice a week. Longhaired coats need brushing three to four times weekly to prevent tangles. Their coat has minimal undercoat so shedding is lighter than most longhaired breeds. Trim nails every two weeks, clean ears monthly, and brush teeth regularly.

Exercise

Japanese Bobtails are active, playful, and athletic. They love fetch, interactive toys, and games with their owners. They have a natural toy carrying instinct and often bring objects to their owners as gifts. Provide wand toys, climbing structures, and puzzle feeders daily. Two energetic play sessions daily keeps them happy.

Training

Japanese Bobtails are intelligent, curious, and very social. They respond well to treat rewards and learn their name, tricks, and routines readily. They thrive on interaction and enjoy being involved in daily household activities. Socialize kittens early. They adapt easily to new people and environments when exposed young.

Nutrition

Feed a quality protein rich diet twice daily. Japanese Bobtails are active cats with a naturally lean build. Monitor weight monthly. Choose foods with real meat as the first ingredient. Wet food supports hydration. Always provide fresh water. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding.

History

The Japanese Bobtail has lived in Japan for over a thousand years, appearing in Japanese art and folklore throughout history. The Mi-ke, a tricolored red, black, and white Japanese Bobtail, is considered a symbol of good luck in Japan and inspired the famous Maneki Neko or beckoning cat figurine. Emperor Ichijo reportedly kept these cats in the Imperial Palace in the 10th century. American breeder Elizabeth Freret imported the first Japanese Bobtails to the United States in 1968. The CFA recognized the breed in 1976.
