Shelties live 12 to 14 years. Collie Eye Anomaly, hip dysplasia, and the MDR1 drug sensitivity gene mutation all affect the breed. Dermatomyositis, a hereditary skin and muscle disease, also occurs. Source from breeders who test for CEA and MDR1 before breeding. Always tell your vet your dog carries the MDR1 mutation before any drug treatment.

Your Sheltie has a gorgeous double coat that needs brushing two to three times a week to stay mat free. Brush daily during seasonal coat blows since shedding is heavy. Pay extra attention to the area behind the ears and around the collar where mats form first. Bathe every six to eight weeks. Trim nails monthly.

Your Shetland Sheepdog needs 45 to 60 minutes of exercise daily. Walks, agility, and herding games match their athletic, eager nature well. Mental stimulation matters as much as physical activity for this sharp breed. Without enough challenge, they become anxious, bark excessively, or develop obsessive behaviors.

Shelties are among the most trainable breeds available. They pick up commands quickly and genuinely love learning. Positive reinforcement with praise and treats gets excellent results. Start socialization early since they can be shy with strangers. They excel in obedience, agility, and herding activities. Avoid harsh corrections since they are sensitive dogs.

Feed a quality small to medium breed formula twice daily with measured portions. Shelties can gain weight if you reduce their exercise without adjusting food. Monitor body condition monthly since the thick coat hides weight changes easily. Keep treats reasonable and use them primarily during training.

The Shetland Sheepdog developed on the rugged Shetland Islands of Scotland, where farmers bred down Rough Collies and crossed them with local working dogs to create a smaller herding dog suited to the island terrain and economy. Shetland farmers needed a dog that consumed less food while still herding the small Shetland sheep and ponies. The breed arrived on the British mainland in the early 1900s and gained Kennel Club recognition in 1909. Today Shelties rank among the most popular herding breeds worldwide.
