Health

Pembroke Welsh Corgis typically live 12 to 13 years. Their long back makes them prone to spinal disc issues, so jumping should be limited. Hip dysplasia and degenerative myelopathy, a progressive spinal condition, also occur. Keeping them lean really helps protect their joints and spine long-term.

Grooming

That dense double coat needs brushing two to three times a week to manage shedding. Shedding increases heavily during seasonal coat blows, requiring daily brushing then. Bathe only when needed. Nail trims and ear checks round out a simple routine.

Exercise

Despite their short legs, Pembroke Corgis are surprisingly athletic and need about 45 minutes of activity daily. Walks, herding games, and agility suit them well, though high-impact jumping should be limited to protect their back. They have real stamina built for herding work. Mental stimulation matters just as much as physical exercise.

Training

Highly intelligent, Pembroke Corgis generally train very well with positive, consistent methods. Early socialization helps manage their natural herding instinct to nip at heels. They genuinely enjoy learning and excel in obedience and agility. This breed thrives with a clear job and mental challenge.

Nutrition

Pembroke Corgis are notoriously prone to weight gain, which puts extra strain on their long back. Two measured meals daily work far better than free feeding. Keep treats minimal despite their persuasive begging skills. A balanced, portion-controlled diet protects their long-term spinal health.

History

One of the oldest herding breeds in Britain, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi traces back over a thousand years to Wales, where farmers used them to herd cattle by nipping at their heels. Their low stature kept them safely under kicking range. The breed gained massive popularity after becoming the favorite breed of Queen Elizabeth II, who owned over thirty Corgis during her reign. Distinct from its cousin the Cardigan, the Pembroke has a shorter tail and slightly different build.
