Health

Dachshunds typically live 12 to 16 years. Their long back makes them highly prone to intervertebral disc disease, so jumping and rough play should be limited. Obesity significantly worsens this risk, making weight management critical. Dental crowding and eye conditions also occur in the breed.

Grooming

Smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired Dachshunds each need slightly different care, but all benefit from weekly brushing. Longhaired coats need a bit more attention to prevent tangles. Bathe only when needed. Nail trims and dental care round out the routine for this small breed.

Exercise

Despite their short legs, Dachshunds need about 30 to 45 minutes of activity daily. Walks and scent games suit them well, though jumping off furniture should be discouraged to protect their back. They have surprising stamina built for tunneling and digging work. Mental stimulation through scent work keeps them genuinely satisfied.

Training

Intelligent but stubborn, Dachshunds can be a genuine training challenge for new owners. Positive reinforcement with food rewards works best given their strong appetite. Housetraining can take real patience and consistency. Early socialization helps round out their naturally bold, feisty temperament.

Nutrition

Weight management is critical for this breed given the strain extra pounds put on their long back. Two measured meals daily work far better than free feeding. Keep treats minimal despite their persuasive begging skills. A balanced, portion-controlled diet protects their long-term spinal health.

History

Developed in Germany centuries ago, the Dachshund's name means "badger dog," reflecting their original job of digging into burrows to hunt badgers. Their long body and short legs were specifically bred for tunneling underground. Three coat types and two sizes eventually developed to suit different hunting needs. Today the breed remains one of the most popular companion dogs worldwide.
