Schipperkes live 13 to 15 years, an excellent lifespan for any breed. Mucopolysaccharidosis type IIIB, a rare but serious metabolic disease, occurs in the breed. Test your breeding dogs and request results when buying a puppy. Epilepsy, hip dysplasia, and thyroid issues also occur. Source carefully and keep up with annual vet visits.

Your Schipperke has a dense double coat that sheds heavily twice a year. Brush twice a week normally and daily during coat blows. The distinctive mane and ruff around the neck collect tangles, so give those areas extra attention. Bathe monthly. Trim nails every three to four weeks and clean ears weekly.

Your Schipperke needs 45 to 60 minutes of active exercise daily. They are fast, curious, and always investigating something. Walks, fetch, and agility games match their energy well. Secure fencing is essential since their prey drive sends them after anything that moves. Without enough activity they become destructive and noisy.

Schipperkes are intelligent and fast learners but carry a classic independent streak. Use positive reinforcement with food and play rewards. Keep sessions short and interesting. Socialize your puppy early and widely since they can be wary of strangers. Their curious, mischievous nature means consistent boundaries matter from day one.

Feed a quality small breed formula twice daily with carefully measured portions. Schipperkes can gain weight if you reduce exercise without adjusting food. Keep treats minimal. Two meals per day works far better than free feeding. Monitor body condition monthly.

The Schipperke developed in Belgium, where canal bargemen kept them to hunt rats on barges and guard the boats at night. Their name likely means little captain or little boatman in Flemish dialect. Belgian craftsmen also kept them as shop dogs and companions. The breed gained popularity among Belgian royalty when Queen Marie Henriette acquired one in 1885, sparking widespread interest. The AKC recognized the Schipperke in 1904.
