Bedlington Terriers live 14 to 16 years, which is excellent for any dog. The most important health issue to know about is Copper Toxicosis, a hereditary condition where copper builds up dangerously in the liver. Reputable breeders test for this before breeding. Retinal dysplasia and patellar luxation also occur in the breed. Source your puppy carefully and test your breeding dogs.

The curly, non-shedding coat needs trimming every six to eight weeks by a groomer familiar with the breeds distinctive lamb-like profile. Brush every few days between grooming appointments to prevent matting. Bathe monthly. Clean ears regularly since the breeds ear canal can trap debris. Nail trims complete the routine.

Your Bedlington needs around 30 to 45 minutes of exercise daily. They are faster and more athletic than their gentle appearance suggests. Secure fencing is a must since they have a strong prey drive and will chase small animals. Mental stimulation through games and training rounds out their daily needs.

Bedlington Terriers are intelligent but have a stubborn streak typical of terriers. Positive reinforcement works well. Keep sessions short and varied to hold their attention. Early socialization is important since they can be reserved with strangers. Their gentle appearance hides a determined character that responds better to patience than to force.

The Bedlington Terrier comes from Bedlington, a mining town in Northumberland, England. Miners developed the breed in the early 1800s to hunt vermin in the mines and race competitively. Despite their lamb-like appearance, early Bedlingtons were known as fierce fighters. Gypsies also used the breed for poaching rabbits and hare. Over time the breed shifted toward a softer look and companion role, though the working terrier temperament remains underneath.
