Savannah Cat

Savannah cats live 12 to 20 years. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy occurs in the breed. Early generation Savannahs (F1 and F2) may carry larger organs inherited from their Serval ancestry, which can affect anesthesia dosing. Pyruvate kinase deficiency has been documented. Males of early generations are typically infertile. Source from breeders who health test and work with a vet experienced in hybrid breeds.

Your Savannah has a short, slightly coarse spotted coat that needs only a weekly brush to remove loose hair. They groom themselves well so baths are rarely needed. Trim nails every two weeks since they are strong and sharp. Clean ears monthly and brush teeth regularly. Grooming is minimal for this athletic breed.

Savannah cats are extremely athletic, energetic, and need serious daily stimulation. They jump extraordinary heights and run fast. Provide very tall cat trees, interactive toys, leash walks, and outdoor enclosures. Two or more vigorous play sessions daily barely satisfies their drive. Early generation Savannahs need even more stimulation than later generations.

Savannahs are among the most trainable cat breeds. They learn leash walking, fetch, tricks, and their name quickly with treat rewards. They are dog like in their playfulness and loyalty. Socialize extensively from kittenhood. Early generation Savannahs require experienced owners who understand both domestic cat and wild hybrid behavior.

Feed a high protein, high meat diet twice daily that matches the Savannah active metabolism and lean muscle mass. Raw or high protein wet food diets suit this breed well. Avoid foods heavy in grains or plant proteins. Monitor weight monthly. Always provide fresh water in large quantities given their high activity level.

The Savannah developed in the United States in 1986 when breeder Judee Frank crossed a male African Serval with a female Siamese domestic cat. The resulting kitten, named Savannah, became the foundation of the breed. Patrick Kelly purchased one of Savannah offspring and worked with breeder Joyce Sroufe to develop the breed formally. Early generations are classified by how many generations removed they are from the Serval ancestor. TICA recognized the Savannah in 2001 and granted championship status in 2012.
