Their long floppy ears trap moisture so check and clean them weekly. Bloat occurs occasionally given their deep chest so feed two meals daily. This breed stays healthy with basic, consistent care.

Your Treeing Walker Coonhound has a short, dense coat that needs only a weekly brush. Their floppy ears need weekly cleaning to prevent infection. Bathe monthly or when your dog needs it. Trim nails every three to four weeks and brush teeth regularly. Grooming is minimal with this breed.

Your Treeing Walker Coonhound needs at least 60 minutes of vigorous exercise daily. Running, scent work, and field activities match their drive and stamina perfectly. Never let them off leash in open areas since their nose overrides all recall training once they catch a trail. Secure fencing is essential at all times.

The Treeing Walker Coonhound developed in the United States from English Foxhounds brought to Virginia in the 1700s. Thomas Walker imported the foundation dogs from England. American hunters selectively bred for speed, a powerful nose, and an ability to tree raccoon and other game. The breed was originally registered as a variety of English Coonhound before separating as its own breed. The AKC recognized the Treeing Walker Coonhound in 2012.
