British Shorthairs live 12 to 20 years. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the primary hereditary concern and breeders should test breeding cats regularly. Polycystic kidney disease occurs in some lines so request PKD negative status from your breeder. Hemophilia B, a blood clotting disorder, is documented in male British Shorthairs. Annual vet visits with cardiac and kidney monitoring matter throughout your cat life.

Your British Shorthair has a dense, plush coat that needs brushing two to three times a week to manage shedding. Shedding increases during seasonal changes so brush daily during those periods. Bathe every few months if needed. Trim nails every two weeks, clean ears monthly, and brush teeth regularly. The coat stays tidy with consistent effort.

British Shorthairs are calm and moderately active. They enjoy play but do not demand constant stimulation. Provide interactive toys, a cat tree, and daily play sessions to prevent obesity, which is a real concern with this sedentary breed. Two sessions of ten to fifteen minutes daily keeps most British Shorthairs healthy and content.

British Shorthairs are intelligent but independent. They learn routines and respond to their name but they decide when to comply on their own terms. Use positive reinforcement with treats for training basic behaviors. Litter box training is typically effortless. Socialize kittens early with different people and situations to build confidence.

Weight management is critical for this breed. British Shorthairs gain weight easily and obesity worsens their joint and heart health significantly. Feed two measured meals daily of a high quality protein rich food. Avoid free feeding. Choose foods with real meat as the first ingredient and monitor body condition monthly.

The British Shorthair is one of the oldest and most recognized cat breeds in the world, descended from domestic cats brought to Britain by Roman invaders nearly 2,000 years ago. Victorian cat fancier Harrison Weir exhibited the breed at the first cat show held at Crystal Palace in London in 1871. The breed nearly died out during both World Wars and breeders crossed survivors with Persians to rebuild the population. The CFA recognized the British Shorthair in 1980.
