Detaillierte Rasseninformationen

Health

Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dogs live 10 to 14 years. Hip dysplasia is a concern given their large, heavy build. As a breed shaped by centuries of natural selection in rugged mountain conditions, widespread hereditary diseases are not common. Keep your dog lean, schedule annual vet visits, and add joint supplements as your dog enters middle age.

Grooming

The long, thick, shaggy coat needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent serious matting. Professional grooming a few times a year helps keep the coat manageable. Mats form most easily around the ears, armpits, and hindquarters. Bathe every six to eight weeks. Check ears weekly and trim nails monthly.

Exercise

Your Romanian Mioritic needs daily movement and space more than structured exercise. Long walks and access to a large securely fenced area suit their guarding nature. They are calm indoors when their patrol needs are met. Without space and purpose, their instinct to guard turns into problem behavior.

Training

The Mioritic is an independent thinker bred to work without constant human direction. Training takes patience, confidence, and very early socialization. Positive reinforcement works better than any form of force. This breed bonds deeply to its family but needs to learn from puppyhood that strangers and normal social situations are not threats. Professional guidance helps significantly.

Nutrition

Feed a large breed formula twice daily. Two meals reduce digestive stress in a large breed dog. The thick coat makes it difficult to spot gradual weight changes visually, so weigh your dog regularly and adjust portions as needed. Add joint supplements as your dog ages.

History

The Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dog takes its name from the Mioritic region of the Carpathian Mountains in Romania, where shepherds have kept and used this type of dog for centuries to guard sheep against wolves and bears. The breed is deeply woven into Romanian folk culture and appears in traditional poetry and stories. Romanian breeders formally established a breed standard in the 20th century. The FCI recognized the breed in 2005. Outside Romania, the Mioritic remains very rare.
