Detaillierte Rasseninformationen

Health

Romanian Carpathian Shepherds live 12 to 14 years and are a generally healthy livestock guardian breed. Hip dysplasia occurs occasionally given their large, powerful build. As a breed that developed through natural selection in harsh mountain conditions, major hereditary health problems are relatively uncommon. Routine vet visits and a lean body weight support long term joint health.

Grooming

The dense double coat sheds moderately and needs brushing once or twice a week. During seasonal coat blows, brush daily to manage the heavy shedding. Bathe only when needed since the coat naturally resists dirt. Check ears weekly, trim nails monthly, and brush teeth regularly.

Exercise

Your Romanian Carpathian Shepherd needs daily movement and space to patrol rather than intense structured exercise. A large, securely fenced property suits their instinct to guard and roam. They are not playful or high energy in the typical sense. Without purposeful activity and boundaries, their guarding instinct becomes difficult to manage.

Training

This breed is deeply independent and was bred to make life and death decisions without human direction. Training requires confidence, patience, and early socialization above all else. Positive reinforcement works but results come slowly compared to working breeds bred for close handler cooperation. This is not a breed for first time dog owners. Professional guidance is strongly recommended.

Nutrition

Feed a large breed formula with quality protein twice daily. Monitor body condition closely since the thick coat can hide gradual weight gain. Two meals per day works better than one large serving. Joint supplements become worthwhile as your dog ages. Fresh water should always be available.

History

The Romanian Carpathian Shepherd is an ancient breed native to the Carpathian Mountains of Romania, where shepherds have used them to guard flocks against wolves and bears for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence suggests dogs similar to this breed lived in the region over two thousand years ago. Romanian shepherds relied on the breed completely for overnight flock protection without human supervision. The Romanian Kennel Club formally established the breed standard in 1982. Outside Romania, this breed remains very rare.
