Standard Poodles typically live 11 to 13 years. Hip dysplasia and bloat are concerns given their larger, deep-chested build. Addison's disease, an adrenal condition, and certain eye conditions also occur in the breed. Otherwise, this is a generally healthy, athletic breed.

That dense, curly coat needs brushing several times a week to prevent matting, since it doesn't naturally shed the way most coats do. Professional grooming every four to six weeks is essential to keep the coat manageable. Bathe every three to four weeks. Their famously low-shedding coat makes them popular for allergy-sensitive households.

Standard Poodles are genuinely athletic working dogs and need close to an hour of activity daily. Swimming, fetch, and active play suit their energetic, intelligent nature perfectly. They have real stamina and were originally bred as skilled water retrievers. Mental stimulation matters just as much as physical exercise for this exceptionally clever breed.

Exceptionally intelligent, Standard Poodles are widely considered among the smartest dog breeds in the world. Positive reinforcement produces remarkable results, often very quickly. Early socialization rounds out their naturally friendly, alert temperament. This breed genuinely excels in obedience, agility, and service work.

A large-breed formula with quality protein suits their athletic frame. Two measured meals daily reduce bloat risk in this deep-chested breed. Avoid heavy exercise right after eating. Fresh water should always be available, especially after exercise.

Despite its association with France, the Standard Poodle actually likely originated in Germany, where it was bred as a skilled water retriever for duck hunting, with its name derived from the German word for "to splash." French breeders later refined and popularized the breed, eventually adopting it as France's national dog. The distinctive clipped coat originated as a practical measure, protecting joints and vital organs in cold water while keeping the rest of the coat lighter for swimming. Today it remains one of the most intelligent and versatile breeds in the world.
