Detaillierte Rasseninformationen

Health

Curly-Coated Retrievers typically live 9 to 14 years. Hip dysplasia and certain eye conditions occur given their active build. Bloat is a real risk in this deep-chested breed, so meal management matters. Otherwise, this is a generally healthy, resilient retrieving breed.

Grooming

That tight, curly coat is surprisingly low-maintenance and should never be brushed dry, which causes frizz. Instead, wet the coat and finger-comb or let it air dry naturally. Bathe occasionally, and avoid over-brushing between baths. Nail trims and ear checks round out the routine.

Exercise

Bred for retrieving in water and field, this breed needs close to an hour of activity daily. Swimming, fetch, and field work suit their athletic build perfectly. They have real stamina and a genuine love of water. Mental stimulation through retrieving games keeps them happily engaged.

Training

Intelligent but a touch independent, Curly-Coated Retrievers generally train well with positive, consistent methods. Early socialization rounds out their naturally confident, loyal temperament. They can be more reserved with strangers than other retrievers. This breed thrives with a calm, patient handler.

Nutrition

A quality protein-rich diet suits this athletic, active breed well. Two measured meals daily reduce bloat risk in this deep-chested breed. Avoid heavy exercise right after eating. Fresh water should always be available, especially after swimming sessions.

History

One of the oldest retriever breeds, the Curly-Coated Retriever developed in England in the 1800s from a mix of old water dogs, setters, and poodle-type breeds. Their tight curls protected them while retrieving waterfowl in cold water. The breed remains rarer than other retrievers but is valued for its hardworking, water-loving nature.
