Lowchen

Löwchens typically live 13 to 15 years, an excellent lifespan. Patellar luxation and dental crowding occur given their small size. Otherwise, this is a generally hardy, long-living small breed with few major health concerns.

That long, soft coat needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent matting. The breed's signature "lion clip" — shaved hindquarters with a full mane — requires regular trims to maintain. Bathe every two to three weeks. Their face needs regular wiping to avoid tear staining.

This small breed has cheerful, moderate energy and needs about 30 minutes of activity daily. Short walks and indoor play sessions suit them well. They genuinely enjoy learning tricks and interactive games. Mental stimulation matters just as much as physical movement for this playful little dog.

Intelligent and eager to please, Löwchens generally train very well with patient, positive methods. Positive reinforcement with treats and praise works wonderfully. Early socialization rounds out their naturally friendly, sociable temperament. They genuinely enjoy learning tricks and excel in obedience activities.

A small-breed formula with quality protein suits this little dog well. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding. Watch portions closely, as small dogs gain weight quickly on excess treats. Fresh water should always be available.

The breed nearly went extinct after World War II, with only a handful of dogs surviving worldwide. Once recognized as the rarest dog breed by Guinness World Records, dedicated breeders carefully rebuilt the population. Today it remains a cheerful, charming toy breed.
