Brussels Griffon

Brussels Griffons live 10 to 15 years. Their flat face causes breathing difficulties that worsen in heat and after exercise. Keep your dog cool and watch for signs of respiratory distress during activity. Patellar luxation, dental crowding, and eye conditions also occur. Syringomyelia, a spinal cord condition, has been documented in the breed as well.

Rough-coated Griffons need hand-stripping a few times a year or regular clipping to keep the coat manageable. Brush rough coats two to three times a week. Smooth-coated Griffons need only a weekly brush. Both types need regular cleaning around the facial folds and wrinkles. Brush teeth frequently since dental issues are common in this breed.

Your Brussels Griffon needs about 20 to 30 minutes of gentle activity daily. Short walks and indoor play sessions suit them perfectly. Their flat face limits heat tolerance significantly, so avoid exercise in warm weather. Watch for heavy breathing or gagging during activity and stop immediately if either appears.

Brussels Griffons are intelligent but can be stubborn and sensitive at the same time. Positive reinforcement works well. Keep sessions short since they disengage quickly. Housetraining can take patience. Start socialization early since they can become anxious around strangers or loud environments without proper exposure.

Feed a quality small-breed formula with good protein twice daily. Measure portions carefully since Brussels Griffons gain weight easily and extra weight worsens their breathing problems. Keep treats minimal and calorie-conscious. Fresh water should always be available.

The Brussels Griffon originated in Belgium, where coachmen kept small terrier-type dogs to catch rats in the stables. The breed developed through crosses with Pugs and possibly small spaniels, which introduced the flattened face and the rough coat variation. Belgian royalty, particularly Queen Marie Henriette, popularized the breed in the late 1800s. The breed gained international attention after appearing in the 1997 film As Good as It Gets. Today it remains a small but distinctive companion breed.
