Pugs live 12 to 15 years but carry some significant health challenges. Their flat face causes breathing difficulties that get worse in heat, humidity, and during exercise. Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome affects many Pugs and can require surgery in severe cases. Eye injuries are common because of how prominent their eyes are. Keep your Pug cool, watch for breathing distress, and visit your vet regularly.

The short coat sheds more than you might expect. Brush two to three times a week to manage it. The facial wrinkles need daily cleaning to prevent infection. Use a damp cloth to wipe them out and dry thoroughly afterward. Bathe every three to four weeks, trim nails monthly, and brush teeth several times a week.

Your Pug needs about 20 to 30 minutes of gentle activity per day. Short walks in cool weather are ideal. Avoid any exercise in heat or humidity since their flat face makes it hard to breathe and regulate temperature. Watch closely for heavy panting, gagging, or labored breathing and stop immediately if any appear.

Pugs are smart and respond well to positive reinforcement. Keep sessions short since they get distracted easily. Food motivation works very well with this breed. Housetraining can take some patience. Socialize your Pug early with people, children, and other animals and you will end up with a wonderfully easy companion.

Feed your Pug a small-breed formula with quality protein and carefully controlled portions. Pugs are notorious overeaters and gain weight fast. Even a small amount of extra weight makes their breathing significantly worse. Two measured meals per day and minimal treats keep them at a healthy weight.

Pugs originated in ancient China, where emperors kept them as treasured companions and gave them their own guards and servants. Dutch traders brought the breed to Europe in the 1500s, where they quickly became favorites of royal households. William of Orange famously credited a Pug with saving his life by alerting him to approaching Spanish troops. The breed has changed dramatically over time toward a flatter face, which has created the breathing problems common today.
