Detailed Breed Information

Health

Shar-Peis typically live 9 to 11 years. Their distinctive wrinkles are prone to skin infections if not kept clean and dry. A genetic condition called Shar-Pei fever can cause periodic high temperatures and joint swelling. Eye issues like entropion also occur given their facial structure.

Grooming

The short, bristly coat needs just a weekly brush to stay clean. Those signature wrinkles require regular wiping and drying to prevent skin infections, especially around the face. Bathe every few weeks and dry thoroughly between folds. Ear and dental care round out the routine.

Exercise

Shar-Peis have moderate energy and need about 30 to 45 minutes of activity daily. Walks and moderate play sessions suit their independent nature well. They're not high-energy dogs but do need consistent movement to stay fit. Mental stimulation through training keeps them engaged.

Training

Independent and a bit stubborn, Shar-Peis need confident, consistent training from an experienced owner. Early socialization is essential given their natural wariness of strangers. Positive reinforcement works better than harsh corrections with this breed. They form deep loyalty to their family once trust is established.

Nutrition

A quality medium-breed formula with good protein suits their sturdy build. Two measured meals daily work well for this breed. Some Shar-Peis benefit from limited-ingredient diets given their tendency toward skin and food sensitivities. Fresh water should always be available.

History

One of the oldest dog breeds, the Shar-Pei originated in southern China over 2,000 years ago, used for hunting, herding, and guarding farms. Their distinctive wrinkled skin and blue-black tongue set them apart from nearly every other breed. The breed nearly went extinct during political upheaval in China in the 20th century. Dedicated breeders revived the line, and AKC recognized them in 1992.
