Belgian Tervuren

Belgian Tervurens typically live 12 to 14 years. Hip and elbow dysplasia are the main orthopedic concerns. Epilepsy occurs in Belgian Shepherd lines, including the Tervuren. The long, fawn and black double coat needs brushing two to three times a week. Shedding increases dramatically during seasonal coat blows, so brush daily then. Bathe every six to eight weeks. Check ears weekly, trim nails monthly, and brush teeth regularly. The coat around the neck is particularly dense and mats easily.

Your Belgian Tervuren needs at least 60 to 90 minutes of vigorous exercise daily. Running, herding work, agility, and structured training sessions all suit this breed well. Without a real job or outlet, they become anxious and difficult to manage indoors. This is one of the most energetic herding breeds and needs an owner who matches that.

Belgian Tervurens are exceptionally intelligent and pick up training quickly. They respond well to positive reinforcement from a confident, consistent handler. Early socialization is critical since the breed tends toward sensitivity and wariness with strangers. They excel in obedience, agility, herding, and protection sports. Give them a job and they thrive.

Feed a high-quality, protein-rich diet twice daily calibrated to your dogs age and activity level. Working Tervurens need more calories than lighter activity pets. Joint supplements make sense as your dog enters middle age given the breeds orthopedic risks. Fresh water should always be available.

The Belgian Tervuren is one of four Belgian Shepherd varieties, named after the village of Tervuren where breeder M.F. Corbeel developed the fawn and mahogany long-coated type in the late 1800s. All four varieties share the same herding and guarding roots and were classified as a single breed until national kennel clubs formally separated them. Belgian Shepherds including the Tervuren served in both World Wars. Today the Tervuren is especially popular in dog sports worldwide.
