Australian Kelpie

The short, weather-resistant coat needs just a weekly brush to stay neat. Shedding increases seasonally, requiring more frequent brushing then. Bathe only when genuinely dirty. Nail trims and ear checks complete a simple, low-fuss routine.

Bred to herd livestock across vast distances, Kelpies need serious daily exercise — well over an hour of real activity. Running, herding games, and agility suit them perfectly. Without enough outlet, their energy turns into anxiety or destructive behavior. A job to do is essential for this breed.

Exceptionally intelligent, Kelpies are among the easiest working breeds to train. They thrive on having a task and respond beautifully to positive reinforcement. Early socialization rounds out their natural herding instincts. This breed genuinely needs mental work, not just physical exercise.

A high-energy working dog needs a protein-rich diet to match their drive. Two measured meals daily support steady energy throughout active days. Working Kelpies may need higher calorie intake than pet companions. Fresh water should always be available, especially after exercise.

Developed in Australia in the 1800s from imported Collie-type dogs, the Kelpie was bred specifically to handle sheep across the country's vast, harsh terrain. Their stamina and independent decision-making made them indispensable to Australian farmers. The breed remains one of the world's premier working herding dogs today.
