Whether shorthaired or longhaired, this coat is surprisingly easy to manage. A weekly brush keeps shedding down and prevents tangles in the longhaired variety. Those curled ears need gentle, regular cleaning — never tug or force them straight. Nail trims round out the routine.

Playful and curious, American Curls enjoy daily interactive play with wand toys and puzzle feeders. They love climbing, so a cat tree is a great investment. They are not hyperactive but do appreciate consistent stimulation. A bored Curl will find their own mischief.

These cats are intelligent and famously good-natured, making training easier than most breeds. Litter training is typically effortless. They learn tricks quickly with treats and praise. Early handling of those ears helps them stay comfortable with checkups throughout life.

A high-quality protein-rich diet, mixing wet and dry food, suits this breed well. Portion control matters since they can gain weight if overfed. Fresh water and consistent mealtimes keep them on track. Your vet can help fine-tune amounts based on activity level.

The breed began in 1981 when a stray kitten with oddly curled ears showed up at a California home. Her unique trait turned out to be a natural dominant gene mutation. Breeders developed the line carefully from there. Recognized by CFA in 1986, it remains a charming rarity today.
