Informations Détaillées sur la Race

Health

Havana Browns live 12 to 15 years and are a generally healthy breed. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy occurs occasionally. Upper respiratory infections occur more often in this breed than average, particularly in kittens. Gingivitis and dental disease are also common concerns. Annual vet visits with dental evaluation protect long term health. Source from responsible breeders who health test their cats.

Grooming

Your Havana Brown has a short, smooth, rich mahogany coat that needs only a weekly brush to stay shiny and healthy. They groom themselves well so baths are rarely needed. Brush teeth regularly since gingivitis is common in the breed. Trim nails every two weeks and clean ears monthly. Grooming is minimal with this breed.

Exercise

Havana Browns are curious, playful, and people oriented. They enjoy interactive play sessions with wand toys and puzzle feeders. They also like carrying toys in their mouth and presenting them to their owners. Provide daily play and climbing opportunities. Without enough engagement they become bored and seek your attention persistently.

Training

Havana Browns are intelligent and use their paws to examine objects with unusual dexterity. They respond well to treat rewards and learn tricks and routines readily. They thrive on interaction and prefer engagement over independence. Socialize kittens early. They follow their owner from room to room and enjoy being included in daily activities.

Nutrition

Feed a quality protein rich diet twice daily with wet food as a primary component. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding. Monitor weight monthly. Choose foods with real meat as the first ingredient. Always provide fresh water and avoid foods heavy in carbohydrates or artificial additives.

History

The Havana Brown developed in England in the early 1950s when breeders deliberately crossed Siamese with black domestic shorthairs to produce a self brown cat. The resulting rich mahogany brown cats were named after the color of Havana cigars. American breeders imported the breed and developed it along a slightly different standard, leading to the distinction between European and American Havana lines. The CFA recognized the Havana Brown in 1959.
