Health

Welsh Terriers live 12 to 15 years. Glaucoma and lens luxation occur in the breed and are the most significant hereditary eye concerns. Request eye testing from your breeder and schedule annual eye exams. Allergies and epilepsy also appear in some lines. Overall this is a hardy, long lived terrier when sourced carefully.

Grooming

Your Welsh Terrier has a wiry, dense coat that needs brushing two to three times a week. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks maintains the classic terrier profile. Hand stripping preserves the correct coat texture for show dogs. The beard needs daily cleaning since it traps food and moisture. Trim nails monthly.

Exercise

Your Welsh Terrier needs 45 to 60 minutes of vigorous exercise daily. Walks, fetch, and agility games match their spirited energy well. Secure fencing is essential since they have strong prey drive and dig enthusiastically. Mental stimulation through training rounds out their daily needs alongside physical activity.

Training

Welsh Terriers are intelligent and more biddable than many terrier breeds. Use positive reinforcement consistently. Start socialization early since they can be feisty with other dogs. Keep sessions short and interesting to hold their attention. Their eagerness to work makes them more responsive to training than their independent reputation suggests.

Nutrition

Feed a quality small to medium breed formula twice daily with measured portions. Monitor body condition monthly. Keep treats minimal and use them as training rewards. Two meals per day works better than free feeding. Fresh water should always be available.

History

The Welsh Terrier is one of the oldest terrier breeds, with roots in Wales stretching back centuries. Welsh farmers and hunters used them to hunt fox, otter, and badger in rugged Welsh terrain. The breed closely resembles the old Black and Tan Terrier from which many British terrier breeds descend. The Kennel Club recognized the Welsh Terrier in 1886, making it one of the earliest recognized terrier breeds. Today it remains one of the most popular terriers in both the UK and the United States.
