Tibetan Mastiffs live 10 to 12 years. Hip and elbow dysplasia are significant concerns given their massive size. Your Tibetan Mastiff has a massive double coat that needs brushing two to three times a week. Shedding is moderate most of the year but heavy during the annual coat blow. Bathe every six to eight weeks. Check ears weekly and trim nails monthly. Never shave the coat since it regulates temperature in both heat and cold.

Your Tibetan Mastiff needs 30 to 45 minutes of daily movement rather than intense structured exercise. Long walks and patrol time in a large, securely fenced area suit their guardian nature. Avoid intense exercise in heat given their heavy coat. Puppies need controlled, low impact activity to protect developing joints.

Tibetan Mastiffs are deeply independent and were bred to guard without human direction. Training requires exceptional patience, confidence, and very early socialization. Positive reinforcement works but results come slowly. Start from day one and never skip socialization. This breed is not suited to first time or inexperienced owners. Professional guidance is strongly recommended.

Feed a large breed formula twice daily. Tibetan Mastiffs eat less than you expect for their size, which surprises many new owners. Avoid overfeeding since obesity worsens joint disease and shortens their life. Two meals per day works better than one. Add joint supplements from middle age onward.

The Tibetan Mastiff is one of the oldest and most primitive large breeds, with roots in Tibet stretching back thousands of years. Tibetan nomads and monasteries used these massive dogs to guard flocks, villages, and monasteries in the Himalayan highlands against snow leopards, wolves, and bears. Western travelers first described the breed in the 13th century. Marco Polo wrote about enormous Tibetan dogs during his travels through Asia. The breed reached Europe in the 19th century and gained recognition from the AKC in 2006.
